Here is a draft of the statement one of our members made at the Library Board Meeting where consideration of internet filtering was being discussed. An interest group had come forward to the Library Board requesting that they filter public computers to prevent access to pornographic materials in particular.
First of all, thanks to the London Public Library Board for giving me the opportunity to speak at this meeting today.My name is Sarah Simpkin, and I’m a library science student at the University of Western Ontario. I’m here today on behalf of the London chapter of the Progressive Librarians Guild. We’re a group of librarians, students, and faculty working to encourage critical dialogue and collaborative action on issues affecting librarians and information workers in London.
